How the fee is calculated
- Fee base = total settlement, or total settlement minus earlier payments if the fee applies only to new money.
- Fee = fee base × fee percentage.
- Homeowner keeps = total settlement − fee.
Tracking fees across every claim
One claim is easy to work out by hand. Fifty open claims with supplements and partial payments are not. In Drodat, the fee percentage is set when the contract is signed, and each claim's financial ledger applies it to every carrier payment as it arrives, so the firm fee and the client's share are always current. If the settlement turns on depreciation, the ACV and RCV depreciation calculator shows what is still owed once repairs are done.

Most public adjusters charge a contingency fee, a percentage of the claim settlement, commonly between 10% and 20%. Some states cap the percentage, and caps can be lower for claims after a declared catastrophe, so the allowed fee depends on the state and the type of claim.
It depends on the contract and the state. Many contracts and some state laws limit the fee to money recovered after the adjuster was hired, so earlier carrier payments are excluded. Use the checkbox in the calculator to compare both.
Usually not. Public adjusters are typically paid from the settlement when the carrier issues payment, under the percentage in the signed contract.
Claims software tracks it automatically. In Drodat, each project has a financial ledger that records carrier payments, the firm fee, and disbursements to the client, so the balance always reconciles.
This calculator is an estimate, not legal advice. Fee limits vary by state and claim type; check your contract and your state insurance department’s rules.
